The Thailand Prachuap Province Whiteleg Shrimp (Thai Union) Aquaculture Improvement Project (AIP) has been developed to support farms and stakeholders in adopting better practices in shrimp production.
The overarching goal of this project is to demonstrate continuous improvement by closing the gap between current practices and certification requirements, while also creating a pathway for farms to gain formal recognition for their progress.
If, during implementation, certain farms are assessed as ready and motivated to pursue certification, they will receive support in the transition into relevant improvement programmes (e.g., the ASC Improver Programme) or move directly toward certification under ASC, BAP, or Fairtrade schemes.
Background
A comprehensive gap analysis was conducted using the ASC Shrimp Standard as a benchmark, with additional integration of key Fairtrade criteria. Based on this analysis, a workplan has been developed to address identified gaps. The initial focus is on landscape-level improvements that can be implemented across multiple farms, such as educational initiatives on responsible antibiotic use.
While the workplan primarily targets compliance with the ASC and Fairtrade standards, it also includes broader sustainability objectives—such as conducting carbon footprint assessments and exploring opportunities to reduce emissions at the farm level. These actions aim to enhance both climate mitigation and resilience.
