The objective of the AIP is to achieve a high-level sustainable aquaculture operation certification in 3 years

The Paiche Farming AIP in Braganca City, Para State, Brazil, will increase the market recognition of responsible paiche (Arapaima gigas) farming by adhering to either the ASC or BAP aquaculture farm standards.

This will be achieved via a collaboration between local farmers, traders, NGO and University, and the processing plant GPesca.

  • AIP aims:
Promote coordination between the three farms to unify their water quality management and minimize their joint impact on the Amazon River Basin water bodies.
  • Conduct an ERA (Environmental Risk Assessment) within the area of influence of the farms and develop strategies to ensure the lowest impact on the natural indigenous fish population, habitat, and wildlife.
  • Promote coordination among farmers to minimize disease risks.
  • Promote collaboration and the use of an effective traceability and general management system among farmers.
  • Promote and develop policies and programs with local government and associated agencies that support local native fish farm communities.
